Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
Patients of Dr. Schwarcz. Pictures have not been re-touched.
Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is a minimally invasive procedure performed in a relaxed setting in the Vein Central office. Before the procedure, the patient takes a mild sedative (the patient cannot drive the day of the procedure). After sterile preparation of the leg, the surgeon places a thin plastic tube with a laser fiber into the diseased vein through a small skin puncture using ultrasound guidance. Local anesthesia is injected around the laser fiber to numb the leg. The laser is then activated and withdrawn, which cauterizes (burns) the vein wall. The vein will then shrivel into a scar and blood will no longer be able to flow backwards (reflux) down the leg. Immediately after the procedure, the patient puts on prescription compression stockings and walks out of the office. The patient is scheduled to return in a few days for an ultrasound study to ensure that the procedure was effective without complications. A final ultrasound is performed one month after the EVLT procedure.
This is the state-of-the-art laser fiber tip used for
Endovenous Laser procedure.
Dr. Thomas Schwarcz is performing a laser procedure in the office. Local anesthesia is used and the patient is awake.
